A two day workshop covering obstetric acupuncture treatment in clinical practice with Debra Betts, author of The Essential Guide to Acupuncture in Pregnancy & Childbirth.

This seminar will present a comprehensive and detailed approach to the treatment of women during pregnancy, prior to labour (prebirth acupuncture), during labour and post labour. Disorders and problems of pregnancy and labour will be considered from the viewpoint of both Western and Chinese medicine. The emphasis will be on treatment strategies that have been proven through extensive clinical practice, backed up by case examples.

At the end of this course participants will feel confident and competent to treat women at all stages of pregnancy.

SEMINAR PROGRAMME

• Introduction to using acupuncture in pregnancy.
• Safety of acupuncture during pregnancy with reference to clinical studies.
• Forbidden points - historical references, occurrence in western texts , relevance to today's practice.
• Acupuncture research - relevant studies in British and American medical journals that can be used to promote safe and effective obstetric acupuncture.
• Prebirth acupuncture - research and its relevance to clinical practice.
• Acupressure for pain relief in labour - research, relevance to clinical practice, clinical feedback.
• Acupuncture for selected conditions with a focus on those most relevant to clinical practice; nausea during pregnancy, miscarriage, anaemia, pregnancy induced hypertension, breech and posterior positions, heartburn, vulval varicosities, musculoskeletal conditions (rib pain, lower back pain, pain of the symphysis pubis, neck pain), induction.
• Acupuncture treatment for postnatal conditions - postnatal tonification treatments, mother warming, persistent uterine bleeding, after pains, breast feeding problems, postnatal depression, postnatal dietary advice.
• Developing a clinical practice in obstretric acupuncture.
• Practical dietary advice during pregnancy from a traditional Chinese medicine perspective.
