Tentative outline

In the modern Western world, many of the problems that health practitioners are called to work with are rooted in emotional, psychological and spiritual distress. Patients come in complaining of depression, anxiety, insomnia, digestive problems, chronic pain, vague discomforts and ever-shifting symptoms that do not respond to conventional medicine, pharmaceuticals, psychotherapy or TCM acupuncture as it is currently practiced in China and the West. But, these problems often respond – in almost miraculous ways – when practitioners are able to bring a depth of empathy and heart-felt energetic connection into the treatment room. This is what the ancient Chinese physicians referred to as healing that is “rooted in spirit” or what is sometimes called “spirit-level acupuncture.”

In this three-day seminar, we will explore how to touch the spirit - the most ephemeral aspect of the qi. By re-enlivening acupuncture and Chinese medicine with the ancient alchemical consciousness at its heart, and integrating it with the insights of depth psychology and modern understandings of the nervous system, we will discover new ways to heal the body and the soul. In this way, we can help our patients move beyond chronic physical, psychological and emotional holding patterns that do no allow them to grow, thrive and freely manifest their authentic nature.

The goal of this kind of work is to restore communication between heaven and earth, mind and body, and thus to bring a person closer to the experience of his or her own wholeness and connection to Tao. Our tools include needles, moxa, breath, movement, touch, poetry, myth, imagination and expanded states of awareness. Many of the principles and tools introduced in this seminar can be used not only by trained acupuncturists but by all who are willing to tune into the subtle wisdom of their bodies, their qi and the natural world.

The seminar will be both theoretical and experiential. Come prepared not only to learn new techniques and strategies but to take real steps towards healing and transforming your own life!

This three day seminar will cover:

• An overview of the ancient Chinese view of emotions and the soul
• An introduction to Taoist alchemy and its importance in psychological and spiritual healing
• An introduction to Jungian archetypal psychology and its relevance to spirit-level work
• Wuxing and wushen: the Five Elements and their relationship to the Five Spirits
• The Self: Eastern and Western views
• Diagnostic techniques and treatment strategies for spirit-level healing work
• Ways to introduce this kind of work into existing practice

This three day workshop will be of value to a wide range of healing professionals including acupuncturists, psychotherapists, holistic physicians, nurses and body workers.
