Tongue diagnosis is a vital instrument used in Chinese medicine both for assessing the current health of a patient and providing a basis for prognosis. It also informs the practitioner about the underlying strength or weakness of the patient's constitution.

During the two day seminar we will view over two hundred color photographs of tongues seen in a Western clinic. The photographs provide a graphic representation of a wide variety of common disorders. Each photograph is accompanied by a description of the significant features of the tongue, the corresponding Chinese diagnosis for each feature, accompanying symptoms, Western diagnosis, and pertinent background information.

Participants will discuss several cases which reflect on how the tongue changed over the course of treatment, with before and after photographs. This systematic presentation provides the student and practitioner of Chinese medicine with a much deeper appreciation for the methodology of tongue diagnosis in Chinese medicine.

This course will feature:

• Discussion of the tongue color and tongue body shape
• Relationship between colour and shape, illustrated by using slides and participants at the seminar
• Discussion of the formation of tongue coating
• Discussion of tongue signs in relation to the organs
• Discussion of the texture and color of tongue coating.

The basic principles of tongue diagnosis will be discussed on the first day of this workshop. Tongue colour and shape will be of great importance during this session as both help to determine the patients constitution and disease pattern according to the eight principles. This will be followed by a discussion of common clinical tongue signs in relation to organ diagnosis . The second day will cover the nature and color of tongue coatings and will especially focus on heat signs, important in the diagnosis for acute illnesses.
